What's Happening at the River?

Here is what's happening at River Oaks Church!

Sunday, November 24

Guest worship leader, Daniel Heffington, will lead us in worship for our morning service. We will have an Evening of Worship and Praise with Daniel Heffington at 7:00 PM.

Daniel Heffington is a singer/songwriter who pairs unforgettable melodies with driving rhythms. A native Virginian, his original songs are steeped in the musical heritage and tradition of the Southeast and fit in with the genre-defying soundscape of the modern era. He’s known for the energy and passion of his live performances that feature soulful vocals and poignant lyrics.

In addition to recording and releasing original music, Daniel has been leading worship in churches since the age of 15. Using music to celebrate the hope of the Gospel is the continuing thread of Daniel's art and ministry. He is one of the worship leaders at Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg, Virginia and regularly shares music with churches around Virginia.

With over 10 years of solo music experience, Daniel has played for crowds ranging from intimate living room audiences to headlining university concert events. His music connects with incredibly diverse audiences as he communicates stories of life, love, and hope through his songs. This has given Daniel the opportunity to take his music into music clubs, concert venues, summer camps, homes, and churches alike.

Daniel has collaborated with artists such as: Mac Powell (of Third Day), Mark Schultz, The Last Bison, and many others.

When he’s not making music, Daniel can be found cooking, exploring, speaking at Generation Joshua events, and hanging out at his favorite local coffee shops. Daniel lives in Virginia with his wife, Abigail and their daughters, Ellie and Piper.

CONNECT with Others Authentically - James 4:11-12

To truly CONNECT, a disciple of Jesus must live out an authenticity that is counter-cultural. The connection that we refer to includes an openness to the input of others and their discernment, an authenticity based on our willingness to be our “true self” in the relationship and finally a genuine love for one each other that comes from a deep awareness of how loved we are by God himself.  Reflecting on Sunday's Message: Referring back to the main text (James 4:11-12) from Pastor Tim Martin's message this weekend, we find keys which are helpful to become "Authentic Connectors": 11 Do not criticize one another, my brothers and sisters. If you criticize fellow-Christians or judge them, you criticize the Law and judge it. If you judge the Law, then you are no longer one who obeys the Law, but one who judges it. 12God is the only lawgiver and judge. He alone can save and destroy. Who do you think you are, to judge someone else?  Last evening I had a great ...

Why does God allow pain and suffering?

Sunday's question is one of the hardest ones to answer, and it is one that all who have ever lived have asked or wondered.  You can watch the message below, or listen here . Some questions to consider this week: Share with your family or friends your own times of suffering. Who do you know who is suffering now? How can you connect with them and be a comforting presence? Where can you make the choice in your own life to choose "better" over "bitter"?

Why Do People Leave the Church?

This event is coming to Woodstock, and I would like to invite everyone to attend with me. Here is your chance to experience an Apologetics conference that will (I believe) be encouraging to your faith and confidence in what is truth. Happening, next weekend, March 7 and 8. https://www.faithandreasonapologetics.com/mary-jo-sharp/ In over 30 years of ministry, there is one aspect of church life that young people have shared with me that has caused them to leave a church. It has also been a primary purpose for them, leaving the Christian faith in general. And here it is, The unhealthy, emotional, and spiritual immaturity of life-long church attenders and believers. These have been people whom they wanted to trust and look up to, but who have lived with an offense, trivial criticalness, judgmental attitudes, hypocrisy, inability to relate to current culture, church hurt, etc. These have been some of the most significant factors influencing young people to walk away from the chur...
